Victoria’s Companion Card: We need one of these!!

Red May 10th, 2009 5 Comments

I was booking tickets to a show in Melbourne next month (holiday, yay!) and I was asked if I had a “Companion Card”, which allowed a companion to come to the show for free. Intrigued, I jumped online and had a look. Wow. This is one sweet card. If you’d rather not hear me ramble about how I want to lobby our Government to get one of these up and running, cut to the chase and visit the Victoria Companion

Most incredible video ever!

Red April 25th, 2009 3 Comments

Okay, so I don’t often get mushy about stuff but this has to be one of the sweetest things I’ve seen in quite some time. Nick Chisholm, paralyzed for the last 9 years with locked-in syndrome, has found love on the internet (with a hot chick!). I’ll stop rambling because it’s portrayed much more heart-warmingly in this episode of Close-Up. Check. It. Out. Now. http://tvnz.co.nz/close-up/tonight-close-up-2646711/video

Obama makes crass “Special Olympics” joke during Jay Leno interview

Red March 21st, 2009 6 Comments

Not impressed, Mr Obama. Not impressed at all. Hopefully the YouTube video below will stay live for you all to see this, but the gist of it goes that Jay Leno is asking Barack Obama if he has kept the bowling alley in the White House. Obama replies that yes, he has kept it, and that he even shot a “126″ the other day. Leno scoffs, as if to imply the score is a little pathetic, and Obama jokes that

Ad agency using “wheelchairs” as a disincentive to not drink and drive?

Red January 28th, 2009 2 Comments

Apologies for the somewhat convoluted heading. However as it turns out, the below image depicting a (presumably) able-bodied guy sitting in a chair with wheels attached to the sides, is far from a quirky gimmick to attract customers. In fact, it’s part of an advertising campaign by Australian agency JAM to convince punters that drinking and driving is a bad idea. This ambient portion is backed up by a print campaign, which you can read here or by clicking on

“Disabled Country” – poem by Neil Marcus

Red January 22nd, 2009 6 Comments

This is just wonderful, it really is. Please, share this with others you know that might be interested If there was a country called disabled, I would be from there. I live disabled culture, eat disabled food, make disabled love, cry disabled tears, climb disabled mountains and tell disabled stories. If there was a country called disabled, I would say she has immigrants that come to her From as far back as time remembers. If there was a country called

Disabled American sues businesses for a living

Red January 21st, 2009 4 Comments

Bloody hell. Take a look at the video below, which chronicles a guy from California who makes a living out of suing businesses who don’t comply with building regulations around the Americans with Disabilities Act. I truly don’t know what to say. Embedded video from CNN Video

Just touched down from Melbourne town

Red December 1st, 2008 2 Comments

Hey everyone, So the biggest two months of my life just finished with a whirlwind trip to Melbourne, where many a startling discovery was made! Here are some questions for you to ponder: Why is it that there are so many people in wheelchairs selling things on the streets of Melbourne? Are disabled people being relegated to second-class citizens? The number of disabled beggars truly scared me. Why are so many of the shops inaccessible? I’m used to most cafes

Barack Obama cares about disabled Americans, too

Red November 7th, 2008 2 Comments

Not only is he a magnificent orator, and the new President of the United States (a fact I’m sure many of us Kiwis are pleased about!), he also seems to have the right line of thinking when it comes to disability. In the YouTube video below, he supports ratifying the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, as well as a number of other initiatives relating to education, healthcare, and independent living. Let’s hope he follows through!

Disability awareness TV campaign for Scope

Red November 7th, 2008 2 Comments

Really choice ad for UK’s disability awareness agency Scope (similar to CCS Disability Action, I guess). Maybe we could run a similar campaign here in NZ? Check out the video below, and please leave your thoughts in the comments below

Live Paralympics coverage – online!

Red September 8th, 2008 2 Comments

Fed up with TVNZ’s appalling excuse for Paralympics ‘coverage’ in the form of one hour highlights packages? Well now you can get live streaming of all the Paralympics events right from your PC! Simply log on to paralympicsport.tv and you can see round-the-clock live streaming of all the Paralympic events. Of course, they probably won’t prioritise our New Zealand Paralympians but I’m sure they’ll be featured at some point. Check it out!
