Service Alert: Re-Li-On-Us Mobility Transport

Red December 7th, 2007 3 Comments

Listen up! If you haven’t heard of Re-Li-On-Us Mobility Transport and you use a wheelchair to get around, particularly a power chair, then read this. It will change your life. I kid you not. Re-Li-On-Us are the new mobility taxi company in town, with a difference. They are 24/7, which is particularly important given recent events. They are also, as the name aptly suggests, reliable. Case in point: I needed to attend a Christmas function in town last night, but

Review: Britomart Transport Centre, Auckland

Red December 5th, 2007 4 Comments

I like Britomart. It’s very accessible, very modern, and very METAL. And I don’t even mean that in a hardcore rock kinda way, I mean that in the spirit of modern architecture, everything in the new transport hub is made mostly of steel. Which is fine if you’re not a fan of warm, earthy tones or pretty artwork, and really into cold, impersonable atmospheres. You’ll fit in quite snugly. I, however, happen to be a fan of injecting life and

Pacific Blue respond to review

Red December 4th, 2007 1 Comment

Last week I flicked an email off to the people at NZ’s newest airline, Pacific Blue, letting them know of the fantastic feedback submitted by one of our blog readers. They had this to say: Dear Red, Thank you for taking the time to email us with the fantastic compliments you came across on the internet. Please accept our sincerest apologies for the delayed reply. A major system outage has meant that all emails from last week were not received

Review: Henderson Transport Centre

Red December 2nd, 2007 1 Comment

Wow! That’s what I thought when I stumbled across Henderson’s brand new transport centre and council buildings the other day. I’m not often in West Auckland so I thought I might as well take some snaps. To check out the pictures now, click through to go the gallery section! Anyway as you can see from the picture on the left, (click on it to get a larger version) the new Waitakere City Council buildings are very United Nations-esque, with all

Catch a disabled-friendly train in Auckland City!

Red November 30th, 2007 3 Comments

This is a blatant assumption based on limited anecdotal experience (recent events aside), but nonetheless I don’t think disabled people use public transport anywhere near enough in Auckland City. Yes, I understand the services are infrequent and at times, operators can be difficult in regards to the imposition they deem you to place on their lives. But I’ve decided I really enjoy catching a train. (Click the pictures for a bigger version) The conductors are friendly and helpful, much more

Train company responds to Felicity’s story

Red November 30th, 2007 1 Comment

After hearing about Felicity’s nightmare at Britomart, I wrote to Maxx and requested an official response. They responded in due course, and told me they had forwarded it onto the train operators, Veolia Transport Auckland Ltd. To my surprise and their credit, they emailed me this morning with an official response. This is what they had to say: Thank you for your correspondence regarding difficulties one of your contributors experienced following the Justin Timberlake concert on Friday 23 November. Unfortunately

What happens when you get stranded at Britomart?

Red November 26th, 2007 4 Comments

Blog reader Felicity had the misfortune of finding this out the hard way after attending the Justin Timberlake concert on Friday night. Read on to find out what happened… I was in Auckland on Friday night to see Justin Timberlake at the Vector Arena. I read your review on the arena and yes I give them 10 out of 10 too. Anyway, I want to tell you how I found the public transport that night. We (myself, my carer and

Review: Pacific Blue Airline

Red November 25th, 2007 7 Comments

This fantastic review was submitted by John, who is a tetraplegic and uses a manual wheelchair. A recent return trip from Auckland to Wellington proved to be a pleasant trouble-free experience. The booking (which must be done by telephone at internet discount rates) was well handled and a wide range of questions were covered to save any misunderstandings on the day. (I saw an article by a blind person complaining that he couldnt book on the internet and that it

Awesome disabled parking space ad ft. Mark Zupan

Red November 24th, 2007 2 Comments

Screw it. I’m just gonna shut up and let you watch it. Take note those of you who commissioned those gut-wrenchingly insipid “You block my space, you block my day” ads – this is more like it!

Britney Spears and Julia Roberts park in disabled parking spots

Red November 24th, 2007 No Comments

Okay, so she might sing like a walrus, shave her head, and exit a limo sans underwear, but parking in a mobility parking space? Now that’s pushing it, Brit. Hah but seriously, I expect nothing less from someone as tragic as Ms Spears, but Julia Roberts? I’d expected better! And yet, as this cute little blog post alludes to, an Oscar is no substitute for a mobility parking permit! You can check out the original press release here
