Snowplanet launches ‘Adaptive Snowsports Programme’

Red January 21st, 2008 2 Comments

How cool is this? Snowplanet is launching a snowsport coaching programme designed specifically for those with physical, sensory, and cognitive impairments! Snowplanet say they’re launching these coaching sessions to “ensure there is no limit to enjoying the freedom of skiing and boarding with your family and friends”. In case you’re not familiar with Snowplanet, Auckland’s indoor ‘snowdome’, I thoroughly recommend you check out their website for more information. Specialist adaptive equipment is available from their rental department and a team

Disabled athlete denied entry to Olympics

Red January 18th, 2008 1 Comment

How’s this story for a bit of a twist: a young South African athlete with prosthetic legs has been told he cannot compete in the Beijing Olympics as he would be at an – wait for it – advantage over able-bodied competitors. The 21-year old was 11 months old when his legs were amputated below the knee but only began running competitively on the carbon fibre blades four years ago. He had immediate success winning the 200m at the Athens

Attitude TV caught up with her last year and had a chat to Sophie and her parents, check it out in the video below!

A new year, and a new spot at the cricket!

Red January 8th, 2008 No Comments

Welcome back everyone, I hope your festive season was full of silly times and fun people, I know mine was! I thought I’d start 2008′s blogging adventure off with a bit of surprising and positive news, especially if you’re someone who frequents Eden Park. It was with a slight hint of reluctance that I attended the Boxing Day ODI between NZ and Bangladesh, and not because of the questionable opposition, but because the placement of the wheelchair seating at Eden

Awesome disabled parking space ad ft. Mark Zupan

Red November 24th, 2007 2 Comments

Screw it. I’m just gonna shut up and let you watch it. Take note those of you who commissioned those gut-wrenchingly insipid “You block my space, you block my day” ads – this is more like it!

The Halberg Trust Activity Fund

Red November 19th, 2007 No Comments

Had a read about this today and sounded quite interesting, so I thought I’d share it with y’all. The following is taken from the North Shore LIFE Centre‘s newsletter, just thought I’d give credit where it’s due The Halberg Trust Activity Fund provides grants to enable young disabled people to participate in sport and active leisure within their community. The Activity Fund is available to support young people with a disability between the ages of 8 and 18, including those

Wheelchair Backflip Guy Turns 16

Red November 11th, 2007 1 Comment

Unbelievably, the kid who got me all excited on myspace when I saw him do a backflip in his wheelchair has just turned 16! You’d think a guy with balls of steel like he’d have to have might be a little older, but no, Mr Aaron Fotheringham is just a young ‘un! If you haven’t seen the clip I’m talking about, check it out below…

NZ Special Olympics team triumphant in Shanghai

Red October 18th, 2007 5 Comments

To be honest, I profess to know very little about the Special Olympics, and the types of events competed in, but hopefully this post will bring me (and perhaps some of you!) up to speed with how our team has performed at the recent summer games in Shanghai. Firstly, huge congratulations are in order, after the team brought home 23 gold medals, 18 silver, and 18 bronze! This is a fantastic achievement, and from what I saw on the news
