Cadbury’s dyslexia ads pulled

Red May 10th, 2009 No Comments

It’s being reported that those distasteful Cadbury dyslexia advertisements I mentioned a few days ago have been pulled, as a result of numerous complaints. Good to hear Cadbury’s listening, but let’s be honest: these never should’ve gone up in the first place. Link to NZ Herald story

Am I taking this too seriously? PC gone mad? (again)

Red May 5th, 2009 9 Comments

So. I was driving to Uni yesterday when I saw a bus up ahead with an advertisement for Crunchie chocolate bars on the back. The advertisement read: 10 out of 9 dyslexics prefer Crunchie Ha. Ha. Get it? Dyslexics? Back to front? Yeah, groan. Now, I know the dyslexic joke has been a staple of comedy routines for years. But laughing at a disability in order to sell a chocolate bar – isn’t that a bit rough? More to the

Do you want to write for Walking Is Overrated?

Red March 16th, 2009 No Comments

Morning folks! As you can tell, my blogging activity has been a wee bit sporadic lately, thanks to Uni going back and me galavanting around this beautiful country of ours. So it is at this time that I ask – would you like to contribute to walkingisoverrated.com? It could be anything – a review, opinion piece, video blog, poem?! Whatever floats your boat. So please get in touch!

Excuse my ignorance, but what the hell is an invalid?

Red March 10th, 2009 10 Comments

Firstly, apologies for the tone of this but I’m annoyed. Trust vernacular to bring me back from blogging oblivion. Now, call me what you like, but when I last checked, the dictionary definition for the word ‘invalid’ read something like this: invalid 2 |inˈvalid| |1nˈvøləd| |ɪnˈvalɪd| adjective not valid, in particular • (esp. of an official document or procedure) not legally recognized and therefore void because contravening a regulation or law : the vote was declared invalid due to a

Some sweet disability thinking

Red February 4th, 2009 2 Comments

Here are some sweet link-drops to brighten up your day! The first is a link to self-professed ‘Wheelchair Junkie‘ Mark E. Smith’s blog, who responds to any sympathy-inducing questions around the impact of his disability with two simple words: so what? I really like this. Here’s an excerpt from this particular post: Often when it comes to the presumed limiting factors of our disabilities, they’re based almost entirely on our own negative thinking – our embracing victimhood – instead of

Honor’s experience with the delightful folks at Henderson Pak ‘n Save

Red February 4th, 2009 10 Comments

We’re all aware that council-officiated mobility parking spaces are reasonably well monitored (or are they?!) but what about those mobility parks which are on private property? Those in malls, restaurants, or in Honor K‘s case, supermarkets? What happens when people abuse them, or even worse, when those paid to keep tabs on them, don’t seem to give a toss about who’s parking where? It’s a problem that Honor found first-hand upon a recent visit to the Pak ‘n Save on

Ad agency using “wheelchairs” as a disincentive to not drink and drive?

Red January 28th, 2009 2 Comments

Apologies for the somewhat convoluted heading. However as it turns out, the below image depicting a (presumably) able-bodied guy sitting in a chair with wheels attached to the sides, is far from a quirky gimmick to attract customers. In fact, it’s part of an advertising campaign by Australian agency JAM to convince punters that drinking and driving is a bad idea. This ambient portion is backed up by a print campaign, which you can read here or by clicking on

“Disabled Country” – poem by Neil Marcus

Red January 22nd, 2009 6 Comments

This is just wonderful, it really is. Please, share this with others you know that might be interested If there was a country called disabled, I would be from there. I live disabled culture, eat disabled food, make disabled love, cry disabled tears, climb disabled mountains and tell disabled stories. If there was a country called disabled, I would say she has immigrants that come to her From as far back as time remembers. If there was a country called
