User review: Comfort Hotel, Wellington

Red February 25th, 2008 No Comments

I’m all for giving credit where it’s due, and as such I credit this ‘borrowed’ review entirely to AttitudeTV’s Curtis Palmer. Curtis says that he was down in Wellington over New Years, and stumbled across a “wee gem” of an accessible hotel, and gives it a solid rating. The Comfort Hotel in Cuba St was primo! It’s a heritage building that used to be the old Trekkers Backpackers. Newly renovated, its classy. We paid $89 a night, the room was

Review: Interislander Ferry

Red February 20th, 2008 1 Comment

Having had a very pleasant, and surprisingly successful journey on the Interislander ferry myself early last year, I was intrigued as to what the folks over at NZ On Wheels had to say about it all. Thankfully, our individual trips seem to have at least one thing in common – the overriding enjoyment factor! It really is a stunning voyage, and a must for anyone travelling New Zealand’s stunning coastline. The picture on the left is taken from NZ On

Review: Te Papa Museum, Wellington

Red January 29th, 2008 2 Comments

It seems like a compulsory part of any visit to Wellington: a trip to our national museum. Te Papa, which translates as ‘The Father’, is an amazing place, and is also home to one of the greatest collections of New Zealand heritage, including John Britten’s infamous Daytona-winning motorbike, replicas of the Treaty of Waitangi, and full-scale models of fascinating animals such as the now-extinct moa. I visited recently during their ‘Whales / Tohora’ exhibition, which was a fascinating look at

Accessible South Island bushwalk guide

Red January 28th, 2008 No Comments

Following on from this post regarding the whereabouts of accessible walks, trails, and other such nature-related journeys throughout our beautiful country, one reader recommended I check out “Accessible Walks: A guide to scenic walks in the South Island of New Zealand“. Written by siblings Anna and Andrew Jameson, of whom Anna is disabled, it acts as a comprehensive guidebook to all the breathtaking scenic walks the South Island has to offer. Accessible Walks provides information about each walk’s gradient, track

Fancy an accessible cruise? Look no further than P&O!

Red January 23rd, 2008 No Comments

The Cerebral Palsy Society currently have a great story up on their site written by one of their members, Lynn Slade, on her experience of a P&O cruise from a wheelchair user’s perspective. I didn’t even know you could take wheelchairs on cruises, much less bulky power ones, but from what Lynn is reporting it sounds like a wonderful experience! She says: P&O have a few wheelchair accessible cabins but it does pay to book early. Ours was excellent. It

User review: Shailer’s Bed & Breakfast, Hamilton

Red January 21st, 2008 1 Comment

Thanks to Caz for this fantastic review! My partner and I went to visit our friends Charlie and Dianna Shailer who run Shailer’s Bed & Breakfast yesterday for a reunion of a special group we used to attend, while there I decided to do research on the accessibility of the house so I took my wheelchair along for the job. When you first arrive you would think there is no way in hell for a wheelchair to enter as there

Review: Coffee Club, Takapuna

Red January 11th, 2008 4 Comments

Well gosh, what an odd place the Coffee Club is. I think it’s trying to put style back into the increasingly-commercialised world of coffee chains, but it’s something which will take a bit of getting used to. What am I talking about, you ask? Read on, and find out… Well as you can see by the picture on the left (click on it to see a bigger version) we went to the Coffee Club at night, seeing as nothing much

A new year, and a new spot at the cricket!

Red January 8th, 2008 No Comments

Welcome back everyone, I hope your festive season was full of silly times and fun people, I know mine was! I thought I’d start 2008′s blogging adventure off with a bit of surprising and positive news, especially if you’re someone who frequents Eden Park. It was with a slight hint of reluctance that I attended the Boxing Day ODI between NZ and Bangladesh, and not because of the questionable opposition, but because the placement of the wheelchair seating at Eden

Accessible gadget review: iPhone

Red December 22nd, 2007 3 Comments

I love my iPhone, it has to be said. It is one of the few of many unnecessary pieces of technology I’ve bought in my life that I’m yet to feel that familiar twang of ‘buyer’s remorse’ over. If you don’t know what I’m talking about and think the iPhone is some space transportation device then shame on you, and check out full in-depth reviews over at Engadget or CNET.com. If you have heard that the iPhone is the sexiest

Review: Atlas Apartments, Mt Maunganui

Red December 18th, 2007 2 Comments

Back in the big smoke today from my trip down to The Mount, and I thought it’d be fitting to fill you all in on where I stayed! It was a cute little place on Maunganui Road called Atlas Suites & Apartments, a mere 5 minutes walk from everything, and I really mean 5 minutes. That was actually one of the coolest parts about Mt Maunganui, everything’s so close! The beach, restaurants, cafes, shops, the main residential area, hotels and
