Is the word ‘retard’ up there with ‘nigger’?
August 27th, 2008 · 6 Comments
In today’s politically correct world, using the right word to describe minority groups is becoming increasingly important. No longer are black people described as ‘black’. No longer are gay people described as ‘faggots’. So why, then, is it deemed appropriate for disabled people to be called ‘retards’?
The latest Hollywood blockbuster ‘Tropic Thunder’, produced by movie […]

Open letter to The Edge re: disabled seating at The Civic
August 2nd, 2008 · 10 Comments
I very rarely get upset. But today, when trying to book tickets for Phantom of the Opera at Auckland’s Civic Theatre, the disabled seating “policy” employed by The Edge pushed me to my limit, and I decided to pen this letter to try and get them to change what is an offensive, discriminatory, and utterly […]

Review: Takapuna Library, North Shore, Auckland
June 28th, 2008 · 1 Comment
Thanks to Saphiya for this review!
Ahh, the library. Not the funnest place to go, but sure is an educational one! The library doors open automatically onto a long ramp (which you have to try and steady yourself on, or it could be one hell of a ride), passing a small cafe where customers can sit, […]

June 19th, 2008 · 4 Comments
I called up The Edge this morning to purchase tickets to Chris Rock’s show in August at Auckland’s heritage Civic building, which me and my two mates are really looking forward to! So imagine my disgust when I was told that there is only provision for the disabled person and “one carer”, and that if […]

Got a disability? Try yoga!
April 21st, 2008 · 1 Comment
I stumbled across an interesting article on CNN.com the other day which discussed how yoga classes can benefit disabled people. Specifically, the yoga teacher mentioned multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, and arthritis as impairments yoga can especially help, but added “”Pretty much if you name a health condition, yoga can help with it”.
I can vouch for this […]
