User review: Outback Inn, Hamilton

Red January 31st, 2008 2 Comments

Big ups to Caz for this great review! This bar is okay accessibility-wise except for a few faults. I went to “The Outback” last night with some friends and getting in was fine, ramps and all, there’s only a few problems, such as if you want to order a drink or food and you’re in a chair, make sure someone is with you to get the people behind the counter’s attention as the counter is quite high. I went to

Review: Central City Apartment Hotel, Wellington

Red January 29th, 2008 6 Comments

Could you say no to $125/night for a wheelchair-accessible room in the middle of Wellington, including breakfast? Well, I couldn’t. Was it a good decision? I’m undecided. Read on to find out if the Central City Hotel, Wellington, would suit you… First off, can I please advise all Wellington-visiting wheelchair users to avoid taking a taxi van at all costs! Not only will TM Mobility Card not work (if you’re from Auckland, in other words you’ll have to pay the

Review: Te Papa Museum, Wellington

Red January 29th, 2008 2 Comments

It seems like a compulsory part of any visit to Wellington: a trip to our national museum. Te Papa, which translates as ‘The Father’, is an amazing place, and is also home to one of the greatest collections of New Zealand heritage, including John Britten’s infamous Daytona-winning motorbike, replicas of the Treaty of Waitangi, and full-scale models of fascinating animals such as the now-extinct moa. I visited recently during their ‘Whales / Tohora’ exhibition, which was a fascinating look at

Fancy an accessible cruise? Look no further than P&O!

Red January 23rd, 2008 No Comments

The Cerebral Palsy Society currently have a great story up on their site written by one of their members, Lynn Slade, on her experience of a P&O cruise from a wheelchair user’s perspective. I didn’t even know you could take wheelchairs on cruises, much less bulky power ones, but from what Lynn is reporting it sounds like a wonderful experience! She says: P&O have a few wheelchair accessible cabins but it does pay to book early. Ours was excellent. It

User review: Shailer’s Bed & Breakfast, Hamilton

Red January 21st, 2008 1 Comment

Thanks to Caz for this fantastic review! My partner and I went to visit our friends Charlie and Dianna Shailer who run Shailer’s Bed & Breakfast yesterday for a reunion of a special group we used to attend, while there I decided to do research on the accessibility of the house so I took my wheelchair along for the job. When you first arrive you would think there is no way in hell for a wheelchair to enter as there

Review: Coffee Club, Takapuna

Red January 11th, 2008 4 Comments

Well gosh, what an odd place the Coffee Club is. I think it’s trying to put style back into the increasingly-commercialised world of coffee chains, but it’s something which will take a bit of getting used to. What am I talking about, you ask? Read on, and find out… Well as you can see by the picture on the left (click on it to see a bigger version) we went to the Coffee Club at night, seeing as nothing much

Accessible gadget review: iPhone

Red December 22nd, 2007 3 Comments

I love my iPhone, it has to be said. It is one of the few of many unnecessary pieces of technology I’ve bought in my life that I’m yet to feel that familiar twang of ‘buyer’s remorse’ over. If you don’t know what I’m talking about and think the iPhone is some space transportation device then shame on you, and check out full in-depth reviews over at Engadget or CNET.com. If you have heard that the iPhone is the sexiest

Review: Atlas Apartments, Mt Maunganui

Red December 18th, 2007 2 Comments

Back in the big smoke today from my trip down to The Mount, and I thought it’d be fitting to fill you all in on where I stayed! It was a cute little place on Maunganui Road called Atlas Suites & Apartments, a mere 5 minutes walk from everything, and I really mean 5 minutes. That was actually one of the coolest parts about Mt Maunganui, everything’s so close! The beach, restaurants, cafes, shops, the main residential area, hotels and

Review: Prego Restaurant, Ponsonby

Red December 10th, 2007 No Comments

Ahh, Prego. How you slumped from a potentially spectacular rating to one of disappointment. Why, you ask? Well, to cut a long story short, a waitress spilt a dish all over my back. That’s right, a waitress decided she could squeeze through the gap between my wheelchair and the wall carrying two dishes. She couldn’t. So the risotto went all over my back, inside my bag, and all over my wheelchair! Now I have rice-sodden clothes, a risotto-smelling man-bag, and

Review: Britomart Transport Centre, Auckland

Red December 5th, 2007 4 Comments

I like Britomart. It’s very accessible, very modern, and very METAL. And I don’t even mean that in a hardcore rock kinda way, I mean that in the spirit of modern architecture, everything in the new transport hub is made mostly of steel. Which is fine if you’re not a fan of warm, earthy tones or pretty artwork, and really into cold, impersonable atmospheres. You’ll fit in quite snugly. I, however, happen to be a fan of injecting life and
