Red September 27th, 2010 No Comments

I shan’t labour the point any further: you must watch this clip. It’s a fantastic piece of drama/dance featuring Rodney Bell and Seeley Quest from the opening of 2008′s Sins Invalid. The whole clip is fantastic, but if you want to skip to the juicy bit, jump to 4:30. Wow.

iPhone “changes blind man’s life”

iPhone changes the life of a blind man

I’ve said it before: I’m a bit of a gadget nut. Last week, I posted my review of the Playstation Move and a few years ago I reviewed the original iPhone, both reviews written from a wheelchair user’s perspective. However, recent articles have come to light that make a single line in my iPhone review stand out:

Well, for a start I can say with confidence that it’s probably not the best phone for those of you who are blind or have a visual impairment.

Let it be known I am officially scratching that line from the record. I recently came across an incredibly emotional blog post from a blind guy who had just purchased his first iPhone, after having it recommended to him by a friend. He says it changed his life. Hear that? Changed. His. Life. A wee excerpt:

Last Wednesday, my life changed forever. I got an iPhone. I consider it the greatest thing to happen to the blind for a very long time, possibly ever. It offers unparalleled access to properly made applications, and changed my life in twenty-four hours… I have fallen in love.

Sounds incredible, right? He goes on to talk about how the iPhone is enabling him to see colour like never before. Check out his beautifully-written review in full by clicking here, and for those of you who are blind or vision impaired, maybe the time is nigh that you jumped on the iBandwagon!

Playstation Move Review: Wheelchair user’s perspective

Playstation Move

I’m a self-confessed gadget freak. As it is, I’m currently writing this review on my Macbook, which is connected to the internet via bluetooth through my iPhone, and on another day, this might very well have been written on my iPad. Point is: I love my technology, and particularly the way it can enhance my life and the lives of other disabled people.

Playstation Move, for the uninformed, is a little bit like the Nintendo Wii. You play games by standing in front of your TV, pretending to wack a golf ball or fight in a gladiator duel, and your movements are picked up by a camera sitting on top of your TV, allowing you to interact with the game with your body instead of a traditional gaming controller. Needless to say, as soon as I got wind of this revolution in gaming I sped down to my local electronics store and picked up a starter pack. I had one lingering question, however: as a wheelchair user, would I be able to use Playstation Move?

Disabled mums and starting school: How does it work?

Red September 17th, 2010 1 Comment
Isabella Devani

Such a compelling read! I’m excited by the thought of one day having my own kids and shovelling them off to school, but questions do arise!

  • How will I tie their shoelaces?
  • Will other kids give them stick about my wheelchair?
  • What will the teacher’s reaction be?

Well, in this article from BBC’s fantastic Ouch! site, self-confessed “sexy, sassy” mother-of-two Isabella Devani tells us about her experience in this exact situation.

My wheelchair was too big for the small classroom, but Kirit was desperate to show Mummy his new coat peg and the like. That meant traversing the mass of under-five’s playing in my path. Resourceful as ever I decided not to risk mowing down the children and parents. Instead, I handed my digital camera to the classroom assistant who went with my son to photograph everything that would be important to him in his first days there. It wasn’t ideal but we both left happy.

Wake, Shake, Earthquake!

Erin Gough September 14th, 2010 1 Comment

Hi guys. Red asked me to write a guest post on my experience of the recent Canterbury earthquake as there hasn’t been much said from a disability perspective, so I jumped (and jolted) at the opportunity. Enjoy and feel free to comment. – Photo courteously of Stuff. I’m usually quite a big fan of shakes; milkshakes, handshakes, even the odd booty shake. But violent, earth-moving, over-seven-on-the-Richter-scale shakes? Not so much. Yet, that’s exactly what I awoke to at 4.35AM last

[video] Sign language interpreter at a Pearl Jam show? Oh hell yes.

Sign Language interpreter

File this under “effing awesome”. I’ve never seen a sign language interpreter at a gig before, but what an awesome example this is! I love how she doesn’t just stand there signing in a ‘sterile’ fashion, but really gets her groove on. Great viewing, so check out the YouTube clip below!

Professing my love for Kiruna Stamell

Red September 7th, 2010 1 Comment
Kiruna Stammell, extraordinaire

Ah, the internet. Enabling professions of love for women on the other side of the world who you’re unlikely to ever meet. Nonetheless, this is a woman who I think deserves all the accolades in the world. Perhaps she’s lucky, living in the UK amongst a thriving disability community, but nonetheless deserves our attention.

Her name is Kiruna Stamell, and she’s an Australian actress who is now based in the UK. She’s appeared on Eastenders, Cast Offs, and the Baz Luhrmann’s masterpiece, Moulin Rouge. She’s shorter than some, but her achievements are totally inspiring. Now, I hate it when the word “inspiring” is used to describe someone who has experienced disability, but this is an exception, because I damn well mean it! Click the ‘more’ link to watch her latest video blog, and tell me you’re not amped to start something similar in your neck of the woods.

Kiruna, I LOVE YOU!

A quick note re: U2 and wheelchair ticket prices

Red September 2nd, 2010 3 Comments

Hi everyone,

I’m so pleased the issue of wheelchair users having to pay more than everyone else for U2 tickets has caught the attention of the mainstream media, sometimes there’s nothing more powerful than the voice of a reporter on your side when you’re trying to affect change! I just wanted to point out a couple of things:

  • We’ve succeeded in changing the minds of the promoters! They’ve decided to make some of the wheelchair seats available in the cheaper price categories, so to my fellow wheelchair users, I hope you can make it to the show by taking up this offer!
  • For what it’s worth, not once have I contacted the media myself, all coverage of this has been initiated by reporters calling me, and I’m so grateful for their support of this cause :)
