Crutches just don’t cut it, miss!

Red May 16th, 2008 No Comments

Poor lass, thought she could park in a mobility park because she’d sprained her ankle a week earlier. How wrong was she! I think most people are aware you need a permit to park in mobility parks, but hell, no orange card was gonna stand in her way! Aaaand she got clamped. Not only that, but she went to the effort of calling her local paper and getting this tragic photo taken, in order to highlight her plight. Showboating? I

BBC Ouch! talks to Philip Patston about… everything!

Red May 15th, 2008 No Comments

A really good read, this is. While Philip was over in the UK, he took time out of his busy schedule to chat to the BBC’s disability-focused website, Ouch! Here’s a selection of what he had to say, or click here for all 13 probing questions! My favourite food is … Baked beans on toast. I love being in England because you can get beans with everything. What is still to do? My goal in the next 10 years is

NZ presented with the Franklin D. Roosevelt Award

Red May 14th, 2008 3 Comments

Last week, the Governor-General and President of the DPA represented our wonderful country in the presentation of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Award in New York City. The Governor-General, Anand Satyanand, says the award recognises “a sustained commitment to address the needs and wellbeing of New Zealanders who live with long-term impairment.” I’m sure we have our own views on that statement But what I found most hilarious was the Govt’s audacity to have the Governor-General greet everyone in NZ’s three

Okay, so James is a 4-year-old boy who has Down’s Syndrome, and is currently funded 10 hours of one-on-one care per week, equivalent to two hours a day at his local Kindergarten. While other kids attend for 17 hours a week, James can only go for 10, because that’s all his support allocation allows. His mother is upset because this entitlement has just been cut from a previous two and a half hours a day, down to just the two.

Wheelchair + lasers + robots = magical car?

Red May 2nd, 2008 No Comments

Well I’ll be, have all my Christmases come at once? If I had a spare $50,000, maybe. Researchers in Pennsylvania, USA, have developed a new laser-guided robotic wheelchair which – all by itself – attaches itself to your vehicle’s hoist after transferring into your car. That’s right, it’ll attach itself. That is, you hop in your car, and your little robot does the rest. Pretty sweet, eh? Would certainly eliminate the need to gut vans to make them self-drive for

Stupid story, but hey, it’s news

Red May 2nd, 2008 No Comments

Now, I’ve heard of some people tipping the poor odd soul out of their wheelchair in aid of a burglary or other such petty crime, but really, ramming your car into a dude in a wheelchair is taking it a bit far, isn’t it? Sure, he might’ve been a negative bugger, but hey, aren’t we all sometimes? Anyway if you haven’t heard this wee Papamoa-based scuffle, read the full story here.
