How’s this for a fantastic initiative? The NSW Govt has announced the ‘Companion Card‘, enabling disabled people to take a carer with them to sporting matches, movie theatres, and even aboard public transport for the price of a single ticket. So now whenever Aussies with disabilities are out and about and want to go to the movies or hop on a bus, they can take a support person for no extra charge!
Minister for Disability Services Kristina Keneally says people who required carer support previously had to pay for two tickets.
“Companion card allows a person with a significant disability who requires a carer’s support to take their carer on public transport, or to venues such as a sporting match or movie theatre, for the price of a single ticket,” she said.
Personally I think this a fantastic idea, one which will do wonders for the empowerment of disabled people all over NSW. Now, if only our Government was so supportive…

The Christchurch City Council has something similar called the kiwiable card. Tthey have a booklet of activities and attractions. Not everything is free but if its not it is heavily discounted (like whale watching in Kiakoura)
