Yeah yeah, this old chestnut. And to be honest, until the punishment for misusing a mobility parking spot is instant life imprisonment, this chestnut will likely remain a thorn in disabled people’s side forever. But it’s always nice to hear people providing a fresh and ‘real’ perspective on the issue. The North Shore Times have run a story this week about 20-year-old Auckland Uni student Narissa Siemonek, who is making a plea to local councils to tighten up the enforcement of mobility parks.
“There are already limited, or in some places no disability parking places, so when people with no disabilities park in them, it means that often I cannot find parking and have to cancel or change my plans.”
“Couriers and countless people … have no regard for people in my position.”
“Mobility carparks are there for a reason. As you can imagine, it is extremely frustrating to have to drive around countless times waiting for carparks to empty.”
Oh but, say the North Shore City Council, “we’ve issued 260 mobility parking tickets in the past 7 months, look at how committed we are”. Um, right.
Good luck to you, Narissa - we’re right behind you! (waiting to use your space when you leave ;))

This comment is related, and not related,…follow that. .I totally agree with Narissa’s fight for the disability parking issue.I am ,what i call an “inbetween”,( i made that up) meaning i have a partial disability, hidden disability, and take the Disability Parking issue very seriously,as my work entails traffic control at Christchurch International Airport, some of us are termed as Carpark Ambassadors. Just to let you know that if you come to the front of the airport there are a dozen or so “free” disability parks ,but i don’t think its for long…maybe mid-May or June, then it changes, and unless you park in the “covered” carpark, you will have to park in Carpark No 1 and its a way to get to the airport!.If you folks would like to be kept updated on this sort of stuff just let me know, esp when there is major renovation work going on,and possible changes to mobility car parks.I could go on about this issue…,but be sure that i /we will be doing the best we can to monitor and control who uses the mobility parks,at the airport, also if you need any assistance at all, please do not hesitate to ask, thats what we are there for.Hope this helps.
