I’ve been contacted by a research manager from a Polytechnic in Greymouth, who is making a presentation to the Wellington City Council, and wants to know the answer to the following question:
What’s it like to journey through Wellington with a disability?
We’re talking hotels, motels, footpaths, public facilities (art galleries, movie theatres, etc.), tourist attractions (cable car, anyone?) - anything at all!
Whether you live in Wellington or have been on holiday there, leave us a comment below - good or bad - and let us know how you found it!
Better yet, if you have any photos you wouldn’t mind being used by the researcher in a presentation to the Wellington City Council, please do send me an email, all images will be acknowledged appropriately.
Thanks everyone!

I would have lived in Wellington if it hadn’t been Wellington

Wellington is relatively wheelchair friendly, (I say this with caution as I am not a wheelchair user,) if you are not on a steep hill and they are not digging up the road or footpath, or both. There is lots of stuff on the footpaths to hinder people with vision impairments - I have accidentally demolished a sign or two. There are reasonable kerb cuts in the central city and most crossings are OK. Usual mixture of accessible and inaccessible buildings. Te Papa is accessible, and all my favourite bookshops and lots of cafes. The central city is small enough to get around fairly easily, but beyond that there are no guarantees. It is a great place to live!
