Okay, so maybe we’re not quite that cutting-edge down here in NZ just yet, but over in the UK, the search has begun for the Next Top (Disabled) Model!
Britain’s Missing Top Model will see eight women compete before a panel of industry experts.
The five-part series aims “to challenge preconceived notions of beauty”.
The winner will land a spread in a women’s glossy magazine, shot by one of the world’s top fashion photographers.
BBC3 controller Danny Cohen said: “This series aims to challenge the artificial boundaries that seem to exist in the beauty and fashion industries.
“It would be great if in the future we began to see more disabled models gracing the covers of the world’s magazines.”

well I am verry surprised at how mutch shit in a tea cup this issue is throwing around all ready…wow maby the world is not ready for it or maby as a disability comunity we are not…I am in two minds half of me agres with the bimbo thing then the other half loves pushing the envalope a bit…gota start somewere i surpose?and as far as the tall poppie thing and all the haters go we should sit back and hope and pray that they find good people that will represent well then support…..cant wait to see the fall out at least its gotchins waggin & jawz flappin !!

WRT my response, I thought I was just having fun. ’twas waiting for someone to join the pisstake with me in whatever way they themselves liked … I like your ref to shit-in-a-tea-cup a lot.
Since it’s been mentioned tho’, I couldn’t care less about representation and example-setting stuff - I’d like that to all be laughed at and made a mockery of whoever the representing is said to include for whatever is going. Community, schimunity.

. Midsomer murders on TV is about my limit in lieu of not being able to make it to Wgtn to see Whitesnake, KISS and Ozzy! I’m old and was being too ikie with my money.
I think social psychologist, Carol Tavris, who wrote The Mismeasure of Woman ages ago, put it best - she said the most important reason for diverse representation is not to show how good everyone can be - but so that we all can see that everyone can cock up just the same! I kinda like that one.
Not trying to be any type of representative or rolemodel has actually freed me up, allowed me to do more with my own circumstances, and just incidentally, seems a better and more natural way to impart stuff down to my nephews and nieces.
Before I changed channels from some makeover fashion shit the other night, it dawned on me how much those kind of programmes are using a kind of reverse psych - they seem to claim and lament that the continual message is that you should want to look like those in the media. Um, is it really? That thought never really occurred to me much at all, til some primary school teacher told me not to worry because I don’t look like other girls. Really? I still can’t really work out what she meant. And now others have said the same too. They’re really a pack of ningnongs when you think about it.

ps. i’m not necessarily suprised, nor complaining about no responses either. there’s more important stuff in this world. please take my first post as just my ligit reaction and opinion that this deserves nothing but pisstake. others may differ. i’m embarrassed now that i’ve introduced other stuff into such a thread. i feel like such a bimbo…! am just lonely and with too much to do to remedy that.
