Kids, this is why you don’t play with wheelchairs

Red February 8th, 2008 No Comments

Because you could end up like the guy in this video. Be warned: this doesn’t feature some Disney-esque happy ending. The production is great and the suspense is high, but don’t say I didn’t warn ya…

Maxx has our baxx, homie

Please excuse my glib title, but it’s late on a Thursday night and writing things like that cheer me up a little bit! Anyway, if you’re wondering what induced me to profess such a thing, allow me to explain. Currently, the Newmarket train station is undergoing a major redevelopment (not before time, too), and is completely out of action. In its place are two temporary stations, one for the west route via Newmarket, and one for the South route. But

8-year old disabled girl suffers epileptic fit, parking company fines her £100

Red February 7th, 2008 1 Comment

Has the world gone totally mad? Given the recent lack of local disability news, I went looking overseas for titbits to fill the pages of this blog, and I found this disturbing story: an 8-year old girl has been fined £100 by the local Welsh parking company for exceeding the parking limit at a local cinema. Never mind the fact that, during the movie, the wee lass suffered a “massive fit”, and paramedics were called to the scene to give

Wishful thinking, or a David vs Goliath story in the making? Any way you look at it, I’d be eternally grateful if you clicked on the image to the left and voted for walkingisoverrated.com in the blog category of this year’s Netguide Web Awards! I know this isn’t as long-established or mainstream as other blogs but I believe it has the potential to create powerful and positive social change, not something many blogs can lay claim to! So take 30

Women with Down’s Syndrome used as suicide bombers

Red February 4th, 2008 1 Comment

I don’t read much about the Iraq war these days, it’s all such a mess and does nothing to raise one’s spirits. However on this lazy Sunday evening I happened across a story which upset me more than any news on this ghastly period of world history so far; that two women, both of whom suffer from Down’s Syndrome, were used as suicide bombers in Baghdad. The attack happened on Saturday, killed approximately 90 people, and wounded hundreds of others.

Red February 2nd, 2008 3 Comments

Okay, so this blog hasn’t been around all that long, but I’m delighted to say that January has been the most successful month for walkingisoverrated.com so far! There’s a graph on the left that you can click on to get a nice graphical representation, but lemme break it down for y’all verbally: 131,343 server requests (I’m not really sure what that means, but it sounds like a lot) 16,168 page views (that’s the number of pages that have been, well,

Snowplanet’s adaptive snowsports programme launches tomorrow

Red February 1st, 2008 1 Comment

As mentioned a couple of days ago, Snowplanet are officially launching their adaptive snowsports programme tomorrow, with the admirable aim of increasing the participation of disabled people in the many varieties of snowsports available. Stuff.co.nz reports: The programme, an effort among Snowplanet, Disabled Snowsports New Zealand and local disability service organisations, gives disabled people the chance to experience snowsports at an easily accessible facility all year. “Snowsports are one of the few sports that people with all degrees of disability

I have a bone to pick with Lesley Reidy

Red February 1st, 2008 6 Comments

Who is Lesley Reidy, you ask? Well, she is the owner of online wine retailer winefairy.co.nz. She is also the author of a recent article posted up on stuff.co.nz entitled “How to be a good customer”. Lesley’s advice includes such gems as “arrive on time”, and “state what you need”; how we were ever successful customers before Lesley imparted her astute insight is utterly beyond me. However, the pearls of wisdom she dropped which resonated most with me were her
