Aussie man shoots disabled son “out of concern”

Dear oh dear, and here I was thinking our Australian neighbours were a people of integrity. The under-arm incident aside, this is probably the most mind-boggling case I’ve heard from across the ditch in quite some time. An Australian man is currently in court for attempted murder, after shooting his disabled son in the face. That’s right, shooting his son in the face. The son, who has an unspecified intellectual impairment, has been under his father’s care for 39 years, and the father says he was concerned about what would happen to his son once he had passed away. So he tried to kill him.

Riiight.

Unfortunately, this is not uncommon. Parents who have been sole carers for their children with disabilities for many years fear their child’s future without them. This is particularly true is small communities where PWD are hidden away. With the changing attitudes to disabilities these events will become rarer. Parents who have little or no support worry about who will care for their children. As a parent of a child with severe disabilities I understand it, but would never condone it.
