The mystery of the disappearing wheelchairs

January 31st, 2008 · 2 Comments

Grumpy Waikato hospital stafferRather than kids pinching lollies from the local dairy, these days it’s wheelchairs which seem to be the hot item, given the number disappearing from Waikato Hospital on a regular basis. The Waikato Times is reporting that around $25,000 is put aside to replace wheelchairs every few years, and unfortunately it’s down to more than gradual wear and tear. Wheelchairs have been found at a local skate park, in the Hamilton river, and even being used by locals to deliver pamphlets! Check out the guy on the left, does he look very happy about all this? No sirree. Perhaps he’s the guy that has to shell out for new ones, who knows…

Anyway, I think this is stupid. Who steals wheelchairs? Especially cruddy hospital ones? If you’re gonna nick a wheelchair, at least grab a motorised one… No, no, I’m kidding, how socially irresponsible of me. Obviously the hospital desperately need these, they’re not like tissues or rubber gloves, and one can only hope that the Waikato public grow up and stop stealing things which to some, are practically legs. Capiche?

If you go to YouTube and search for “wheelchair” most of the results are people doing “wheelchair tricks” in hospital type wheelchairs for fun. I wonder is this the reason people take them?
