Mobility parking infringement fine to triple

Mobility Parking SignHooray! It’s been reported by Radio New Zealand that the fine for parking in a space reserved for mobility card holders is set to increase by more than 3 times the current amount. Presently, if you park in a mobility space, and the parking warden gives enough of a shit to ticket you (which, it seems, is fairly rarely), you’re presented with a meagre $40 fine. Thankfully, this will be bumped up to a heftier $150 later this year, and I understand it will be effective across the whole country, rather than rely on local councils to implement the increase.

The Parking Association, which represents many private car park operators and shopping centres, says the current fine does not reflect the seriousness of the offence.

Its chairperson, Colin Waite, says drivers who illegally park in mobility spots are arrogant and intolerant.

Damn straight, Colin!

Good news but… We are always spotting cars in the Mobility parks outside our Centre. We leave a sarcastic message on their windscreen if they are not showing a permit card. I have NEVER seen a warden give any of them a ticket, but they appear from nowhere with their ticket book if you overstay your parking meter for even a minute!

Seems good to increase penalty for parking illegally in a mobility park but how about increasing the fine for parking on a footpath so selfishly that a wheelchair (or pushchair) can't get past.

After all, not everyone with a disability drives – but almost everyone needs to use the footpath.

So, so true Celia… One of the things that frustrate me most is just this – people parking on footpaths, causing me to 'take the road', not the safest option out! I'll check out the site you linked to now – thanks for that!
