Help a brother out #2: International comedian looking for accessible accommodation!
Red January 21st, 2008 3 Comments
In quite exciting news for anyone who wants to get in the good books of an internationally-acclaimed comedian and disabled leader Liz Carr, Liz is visiting NZ with her partner throughout March and April, and is looking for places to stay! If any of you out there know of anyone with an accessible home who’d be interested in hosting (or even have accessible accommodation yourself that you wouldn’t mind sharing with) a “fabulously black” comedian, or if you’d like to discuss the idea further, then click here to email Philip who’s helping Liz out with all of this. Let’s show her how hospitable Kiwis really are!

Do you think she'd be ok getting up our stairs? I won't drink much so I'd be ok lifting her up and down the stairs when she needs to. There's room on the couch for two if she sleeps sitting up. If she wants to lie down with her partner then why can't she just walk too? The shower is inaccessible, but I have a camping shower that I can put up in the kitchen. The toilet is also inaccessible, but there are lots of spare buckets around. Is she hot? We normally charge $50 per week for people to crash in the lounge, but for her we'll have to make it $75 because she's going to be a bloody nuisance.
An excellent place to stay inWellington is the Home of Compassion, which was previously a private hospital. It has easy drive on access (rare in Wellington) and wide corridors which are easy to navigagte in a wheelchair. You would need a car to get there though as the approach is very steep, but flat when you arrive at the Home of Compassion. Parking is free.
One bathroom is wheelchair friendly, with a wet area shower – no lip in shower and a fold down seat. Toilet is OK too, with a hand rail, but a bit of a tight squeeze by the shower.
Bedrooms are average size but take my wheelchair OK. Some rooms are bigger than other so need to specify this when booking.
Rate is only $45 per night single includes continental breakfast. $75 per night doubleand whi8le they have groups there ar times, they also cater for casual guests.
Separate TVroom, and good sized lounge and fully equipped kitchen area where you can cook your own mealsif required. Home of Compassion is run by former nuns of the hospital with paid staff to help. I find the staff delightful and very keen to help in any way
I work from home for a national NGO organisaton and we hold our quarterly Executive meetings at the Home of Compassion and other meetings as required. There is a
lounge available for hire that takes up to 25 people and also a conference room that holds about 75.
