Australian flagAn Australian woman who was part of a trial for a new labour induction drug has been awarded A$886,000 after her child was born with cerebral palsy. The child’s mother, Kimberley Reid, sued the hospital after her son, Joshua, was born severely disabled, and claimed she was told that misoprostol was the only available drug for induction at the time and that she was not informed of the associated risks.

The trial of the drug misoprostol, marketed as Cytotec, was also spread across 50 other women, with 12 of those now coming forward as their children have also being diagnosed with various disabilities. Misoprostol is licensed in Australia for the treatment of gastrointestinal ulcers in men and non-pregnant women and to treat haemorrhage after normal delivery.
