Accessible gadget review: iPhone

Red December 22nd, 2007 3 Comments

I love my iPhone, it has to be said. It is one of the few of many unnecessary pieces of technology I’ve bought in my life that I’m yet to feel that familiar twang of ‘buyer’s remorse’ over. If you don’t know what I’m talking about and think the iPhone is some space transportation device then shame on you, and check out full in-depth reviews over at Engadget or CNET.com. If you have heard that the iPhone is the sexiest

I must embarrassingly admit I’ve never actually seen a Touch Compass performance, but if it’s anything as good as these guys, I’m missing out big-time! Check this video out, talk about stunning…

“I won’t hurt you, I have no legs”

Red December 20th, 2007 1 Comment

What an absurd story this is! I think I need a new “only in America” blog category. Anyway, have a read of this… A Westmoreland County man accused of threatening a judge wants the charges dismissed because he says he couldn’t possibly carry out the threat — he has no legs and limited use of his arms. 49-year-old Samuel Shoemaker’s attorney says his client was simply blowing off steam. Shoemaker is charged with retaliation against a judicial official and making

Disabled people refused entry to special education

Red December 19th, 2007 3 Comments

Taken from stuff.co.nz: A centre that cares for severely disabled people faces having to turn people away next year because the Government is refusing to provide extra funding. The Chris Ruth Centre offers long-term, one-on-one care and specialist services for people in Christchurch with very high special needs who are too old to stay in the school system. Six more people want to enrol at the centre next year, but may not be able to because of the Government’s refusal

“We’ve got enough mobility parks” – Whangarei District Council

Red December 19th, 2007 No Comments

A quick squizz over at the Tiaho Trust website reveals quite a disturbing article focussing on the Whangarei City Council, who claim they already have enough mobility parks and are worried that any extra might exclude members of the “general public”, implying that disabled people are not part of the general public?! In fact, deputy mayor Kahu Sutherland admits to having “a problem with disability carparks”, which is particularly ironic given Northland’s high representation in adult obesity, which can lead

Review: Atlas Apartments, Mt Maunganui

Red December 18th, 2007 2 Comments

Back in the big smoke today from my trip down to The Mount, and I thought it’d be fitting to fill you all in on where I stayed! It was a cute little place on Maunganui Road called Atlas Suites & Apartments, a mere 5 minutes walk from everything, and I really mean 5 minutes. That was actually one of the coolest parts about Mt Maunganui, everything’s so close! The beach, restaurants, cafes, shops, the main residential area, hotels and

Off to the Mount!

Red December 14th, 2007 No Comments

My sister and I are roadtrippin’ it down to Mt Maunganui this weekend to see one of my best friends get married! Whilst it’s all very exciting, it also means the blog won’t be updated over the weekend, so um, prepare yourselves No doubt I’ll have tonnes of photos and things to report upon my arrival! Let’s see how this idyllic beach town stacks up accessibility-wise, shall we? Have a good weekend everyone!

Airlines apply to HRC to exclude disabled people

Red December 14th, 2007 No Comments

It seems that a number of airlines in our friendly neighbouring country of Australia have recently applied to their Human Rights Commission for an exemption to the international law requiring access to transport for disabled people. The airlines are mainly the very in-vogue “budget” airlines, who are (understandably) looking to cut costs across the board. The only problem is, part of their “cost-cutting” plans involve removing the ability for those in power chairs, for example, to travel. Further examples include
