Review: Duchess Motor Lodge, Mt Wellington, Auckland
Walkingisoverrated.com forum user dieseldave has given me a headsup about a nice motel on the outskirts of Auckland called the Duchess Motor Lodge. It is situated on the Mount Wellington Highway, and I imagine would be about 20-30 minutes drive from central Auckland. They are reasonably priced, rooms ranging from $99/night through to $140/night with a spa bath. It’s probably worth noting that these prices are dated January 1999 so it might be worth checking with them for an updated price list!
Anyway, dieseldave had this to say:
They have a disabled room with ramps to the door, bars in the shower and toilet. But you need you own shower seat, unless you can use one of the motels resin chairs.Pets Including dogs are welcome. The owners are very helpful, and aware of our needs.It is not a high class establishment but very comfortable. I stayed there, along with my dog, for about 3 months when my home was being modified for my use, I became part of the family but my privacy was still respected.

My husband and I stayed there for a night and I have made a list of what was wrong with the duchess motor lodge. What was good about it was the bed and the shower, what was wrong about it is as follows-the furniture is so outdated, there were 2 cockroaches 1 climbing the wall by the light switch in the lounge and 1 on the net curtain, the net curtains were ripped and dirty, there was a light in the toilet, but where was the light switch, the heater in the bathroom never worked, there were cobwebs above the microwave in the corner, the milk we were given, even though was dated the 13/9 it was off so when I poured this down the sink it was literally cheese,the room smelt musty, the floor hadnt been vaccuumed under the bed. We have stayed in alot of motels around the country and I have to say this was the worst. I would not recommend this motel at all, because it needs a complete overhaul.
