Shocking treatment of disabled people in Serbia
Serbia might seem like another planet to most of us, but that comparison seems apt when you read about the recent atrocities being committed in the central European nation against thousands of disabled people.
Reports of disabled adults and children being physically tied to beds and cribs for long periods of time, sometimes years, along with reports of filthy conditions within the institutions that are set up to ‘care for’ disabled people, are all part of a damning report released by Mental Disability Rights International.
While visiting one of six institutions covered in the report, activist Laurie Ahren said she had been “most disturbed” by the case of a 21-year-old man who had been there for 11 years. “I asked the nurse how often he was taken out of the crib and she said ‘never, he has never left the crib in 11 years’,” Ms Ahren said.
