An update on the Starbucks saga

November 16th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Starbucks LogoYou may remember, if you saw the CloseUp piece on this site, that Starbucks were going to get in touch with me regarding the accessibility of their stores. Whilst I’m pleased to say they did get in touch a week later, and I did meet up with a man by the name of Joe Rich, I’m incredibly disappointed by what has happened since.

By “what has happened”, I mean that absolutely nothing has happened. In fact, during Joe and I’s meeting, he wrote a mere three words down on paper, whilst I talked at length about ways by which their staff could help people with a disability, whether they’re in a wheelchair or otherwise. I also mentioned competitor Esquire’s policy of bringing drinks to customers, disabled or not, and how that would be a fantastic way for people who have trouble reaching their absurdly high collection counters of getting their drinks safely and pleasantly. Still, nods of the head but no words written down.

He told me, after our 15 minute chat and 3 words written, that he would be in touch with the proposed training amendments and improved policy towards disabled people, and still, nothing. I guess I’m just disappointed that I’ve come across another example of a company that wants to be seen to be doing a lot, and yet in reality doesn’t seem to do anything at all.
