Family friend wants disabled Auckland woman sterilised

Disabled Auckland woman should be sterilisedAnd you thought it was just those crazy poms who want to stop those with disabilities having babies – oh no, it’s happening right here on our front doorstep, too.

An intellectually disabled woman, pregnant for the third time in as many years, is “incapable of looking after herself, let alone a baby”, according to the woman’s ‘Aunty’ (not blood-related), and should be sterilised. The BOP Times are reporting that she is currently living on the streets of Auckland, which is admittedly no place to raise a child, but should the natural rights of this woman be taken away from her because of the lack of support systems in place to help women in situations as dire as this one? It is naive to think that someone with an intellectual impairment would be able to raise a child completely independently, but that’s not to say they shouldn’t be able to have children at all! I believe it’s the government’s responsibility to make sure there are services in place which are easily accessible, in order to support those with extra-ordinary needs.

Taking away this woman’s right to have children is not the answer.

What do you think?

I think it is every woman’s right to have children regardless of their circumstances. I would like to see more support offered to those that need it.

I use a walker to assist my mobility . I get very frustated when attempting to open doors that open inwards or outwards. Have had one nasty fall already! Wouldn’t sliding doors for access/egress be ideal?
