Review: Columbus Cafe, Dominion Road

Disabled bathroom as a storage facilityYou’d think it was a fairly easy concept to grasp, that wheelchair users might want to, oh I dunno, fit into the disabled bathroom provided for them, so it kinda defeats the purpose when places decide their new accessible bathroom would look great as a storage room.

Perhaps it is the size, that puts them off? The sudden realisation that gosh, this is so much larger than our regular toilet, perhaps we can do something with all the extra space.. then the proverbial penny drops, and they discover they can put some large tray-carrying thing on wheels in there! What a fantastic idea, I mean honestly, who needs all that excess space.. wheelchair users? pfft.

Haha okay so sarcasm aside, I took these pictures during a visit to the Dominion Road Columbus cafe today, and as much as I love their coffee and little cakey things, their accessible bathroom is appalling. I can fit my chair in, but not turn it around! Another example of having to pee with the door open. Good times, I assure you. But in fairness, check the cafe out, their food is all made on-site and fresh and delicious and blah blah blah.. their toilet sucks.

THE LOWDOWN:

  • Huge selection of home made paninis, cakes, and other baked goodness
  • Friendly staff, wide variety of coffees, teas, and frappes (good for the impending summer!)
  • Stairs up to the front, ramp up the side of the building (Bellevue Ave), reasonably steep though!
  • Counter at a good height, reachable (and clean!) EFTPOS
  • Lots of room to move around, in my power chair I can sit at about 80% of the tables available
  • Accessible bathroom is good, only problem is the majority of the space is taken up by a big wheelie-tray thing
  • Overall accessibility rating: 4 / 5 :)
