I know I’m running on a bit of an Australian angle today, but I gotta admit, they’re leading the way…
In Sydney over the weekend, a new political party - “The Carers Alliance Party” - was established by parents of children with a disability. They’re aiming to increase awareness within government about the struggles that carers, and in particular carers who are family members, face in looking after those they love. They’re campaigning for better support services (or in some cases, even for them to exist!), something which people like Guy Tiffin can attest to being sorely lacking in New Zealand.
I for one believe that support workers for people with disabilities need to be paid better, receive adequate training (I’d be surprised if there’s any at all going on at the moment), and for the role itself to be transformed into one which is just as attractive as any other, and not left to the oafs of this world to fill..

Here here. Being a mum to three kids who have a form of autism, finding help is simply not there. I have no family members wishing to assist me, I live in Invercargill so tried through Time Out Carers, and I was sent someone who had no idea how to relate to kids in general, so the idea of assisting me was simply a joke.
It really gets one thinking can we make enough changes, to educate others on disability, or shall we have to be placed in the too hard basket.
