If you’re blind and love bush walks…

Blind bush walkThen this is the place for you!

The linked article describes a bushwalk set in the 35-hectare World Heritage-listed Lamington National Park, and features a special bush walk designed for those with vision impairments called ‘Senses Trail’.

The 500m-long trail was the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. It has 13 stopping places with signs in braille. A rope guides walkers along the trail, and small rope tails hanging from it warn there’s a step coming: one tail for a step down, two for a step up.

The only problem is.. it’s in Australia. I know, it’s unfortunate, but perhaps DOC could take a leaf out of their book and design something similar here in New Zealand. After all, it’s not every day you stumble across a bush walk – in fact, anything – designed with the vision impaired in mind!

The website, if you’re looking for more info, is located here, but it seems to be having some issues at the mo. But honestly, this is just such an exciting sign of what could one day be the norm! Keep rockin’ it, Sunshine Coast :)

Or if you are in Auckland, check out the blind garden at the Auckland Domain, near Titoki St.
